The cultural importance of maintaining a strong connection to country was the focus of this collaborative creative project that elevated women’s voices and talents via the co-creation of a topographic cultural map of the Langford area.
As a part of the project, textile artist Susie Vickery joined the local women’s art and yarning circle to share knowledge and practical skills while co-creating the topographic tapestry map depicting the local area’s landscapes, natural resources, and flora and fauna.
A series of workshops inspired by the research of Professor Len Collard encouraged participants to use textiles to explore their culture, language, history, identity and sense of place and Elder Geri Hayden shared local stories with the group.
The multicoloured map was displayed at the Revealed Exhibition and Art Market at the Fremantle Art Centre before finding a permanent home at WA Museum Boola Bardip.
